Strive for perfection in everything you do. Take the best that exists and make it better. When it does not exist, design it.”  -Henry Royce

His name and his cars bring thoughts of luxury and money but Henry Royce’s real focus was not with either of those but with his obsession for striving for perfection.

Henry Royce, was born on March 27, 1863.  As the youngest of five children, he had to grow up quickly, after his father died when he was 9yrs old.  With only a year of formal school he began delivering newspapers and telegrams to make extra money for the family.

In 1884, at just 21yrs old he started F.H. Royce and Company, and like Ferruccio Lamborghini, who originally built Tractors before building cars, Royce began building cranes.

After competition began to slow his crane business, he started thinking about building a car.  He bought a car in 1901, that he felt was not built up to his high standards, and he decided to build three cars in 1904 under the Royce name.

Charles Rolls, Rolls was already an accomplished motorist in 1904. In 1903, he had broken the world land speed record in Dublin driving a 30hp Mors at nearly 83mph.  Rolls had set up one of the first car dealerships in Britain with his friend Claude Johnson: CS Rolls & Co. Together they imported and sold Peugeot motor cars from France and Minerva motor cars from Belgium.

On May 4, 1904 Charles Rolls and Henry Royce, meet for the first time in what would be an historic meeting at the Midland Hotel, in Manchester England.  Within minutes of seeing Royce’s twin-cylinder 10hp, Rolls knew he had found what he was looking for. After taking the motor car for a drive, Rolls agreed on the spot to sell as many motor cars as Royce could build, under the name Rolls-Royce and the rest is history.

This incredible Banquet menu, dated June 14, 1929, is celebrating the historic 10th anniversary of the first direct transatlantic flight by Alcock and Brown, who flew the modified Vickers Vimy, powered by two Rolls-Royce Eagle 360 hp engines, has been hand signed in the top left corner by Henry Royce.

We’ve also included a photo of Henry Royce next to the signed document, and centered below both, we’ve placed one of Royce’s most thought provoking quotes, a statement that speaks to the perfectionist in all high achievers.
