Roger Gilbert Bannister born March 23, 1929, in Harrow, Middlesex, England. Bannister is the first man in history to run a mile in less than four minutes, a feat that was considered impossible in 1954. Up until he accomplished this, most people thought the four-minute mark was impossible to break. They thought the human body couldn’t physically go that fast – that it would collapse under the pressure.
No-one could run a mile in less than four minutes.
It was impossible.
You were crazy to even try.
That was, until Bannister proved everyone wrong.
What was truly incredible is that once he crashed through that barrier, the rest of the world saw that it was possible, and this barrier that had stood for thousands of years, would now be broken routinely.
Tony Robbins has used the story of Roger Bannister in his seminars regularly to explain how we as humans can break through mental barriers when we realize that those barriers are just that, mental barriers as evidenced by the many runners that broke the seemingly impossible four minute barrier soon after Bannister proved it's possibility.
This beautiful piece is a copy of a photo taken from that record-breaking day in 1954. This 12X16 black and white photo, depicts Roger Bannister crossing the finish line. In the top right corner, in black felt tip pen, is written "Roger Bannister May 6th, 1954", in Roger Bannister’s own hand.
Below the signed photo, and centered on the frame, is an inspirational quote from Bannister himself.
