"Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up." -Thomas Edison
Thomas Edison was born February 11, 1847, and is considered to be the greatest inventor the world has ever known. Both an American inventor and entrepreneur, he has developed devices that have greatly influenced life around the world. Edison's phonograph created todays music industry, his motion picture camera created our incredible film industry, and the long-lasting practical electric light bulb made it possible for all industries to flourish even when light wasn't available.
Edison was a prolific inventor, who held 1,093 US patents in his name, as well as many patents in the UK, France, and Germany.
This incredible hand written letter, from Thomas Alva Edison, on his ‘Menlo Park, NJ Laboratory stationary, is speaking about an update on “The Light” and is dated August 24, 1880. This piece of history is nearly 140 years old and written just seven months after receiving his U.S. Patent on his “Incandescent Lamp.” The Letter reads; “My dear husbands, you must not blame me for not answering your letters, as you well know that I have not a moment to spare. You may however expect a detailed letter from me regarding my ore milling process and ‘The Light’ in short time. I am grateful at your great success with the telephone. Eldrid writes tomorrow regarding Co. affairs. Yours truly.”
It has been hand signed, at the bottom, “Thomas A. Edison” in Edison's beautifully exaggerated style. Next to the letter is a powerful photo of Edison from his Edison’s laboratories. Below the photo and letter we've included one of Edison's most prolific quotes. One that speaks to how many great ideas have been lost because someone decided to quit too soon. Edison believed that failing was progress. He didn't believe in quitting and it served him well. This quote sheds direct light on his mindset.
