Westinghouse was 19 years old when he created his first invention, the rotary steam engine. Around this time, he witnessed a train wreck where two engineers saw one another, but were unable to stop their trains in time using the existing brakes. A brakemen had to run from car to car, on catwalks atop the cars, applying the brakes manually on each car, something Westinghouse saw as inefficient.
In 1869, at age 22, Westinghouse invented a railroad braking system using compressed air. The Westinghouse system used a compressor on the locomotive, a reservoir and a special valve on each car, and a single pipe running the length of the train (with flexible connections) which both refilled the reservoirs and controlled the brakes, allowing the engineer to apply and release the brakes simultaneously on all cars.
George Westinghouse is also known for financing Nikola Tesla’s work during his race to bring electricity to businesses and households and ultimately making alternating current mainstream.
Westinghouse Electric Corporation was Founded by George Westinghouse in 1886 and the name still exists today. The corporation purchased the CBS Broadcasting Company in 1995 and became the original CBS Corporation in 1997. The Westinghouse Electric Company Toshiba purchased the trademarks in 2006 and are now a division of household appliances.
In this incredible historic letter, dated October 18, 1895, from George Westinghouse on his personal letterhead, he speaks about his latest invention. Westinghouse was working on a way to control and regulate operation of the gas engine. In this letter he says, “Just as soon as the gas engine matter is far enough advanced, I shall have pleasure in giving Mr. Edwards every facility for writing an article.” He would file a Patent in this matter less than two months later on Dec 7, 1895, PATENT 583,585.
At the conclusion he has signed his name, in his own hand “Geo Westinghouse”.
